The Breast Augmentation Procedure
Breast augmentation is one of the most poplar procedures in plastic surgery today because the satisfaction rate is very high. Many women that come into our office interested in this procedure have thought about it for some time. Some women want to feel more sexy, confident and feminine. Others want to fit into clothing better. Whether you want to show off the latest fashions or reclaim your figure, breast enhancement using today’s modern techniques permit you to have safe and stunning results. Breast augmentation is performed to enhance the size and shape of the breast. Women whose breasts are disproportionately small, uneven or suffer the loss of breast tissue after pregnancy, may be candidates for such a procedure. With some patients, a lifting procedure may be needed called a mastopexy, in addition to the augmentation.
You are encouraged to bring pictures of breasts shapes that you like – and that you don’t like to your consultation. While it may not be possible to have a similar result after your procedure, such an exercise does help with communication. It may be helpful to bring a bra in the size you would like to be after surgery so that we can get an additional assessment as to your expectations. Dr. Kulick will review with you pictures of his other patients that received a breast augmentation. He will then examine you, discuss your options based on your expectations as well as your current shape and come up with a treatment plan specifically designed for you.
Several variations of the procedure exist, but all consist of making an incision in the skin (in one of three locations) and placing a specially designed implant under the breast tissue or muscle. The three locations for the incision that Dr. Kulick recommends are either under the arm, around the nipple area or beneath the breast. These locations are designed to keep incisions as inconspicuous as possible. The decision as to where to place the incision for your procedure will depend on your personal preference and anatomy. Precise positioning of the implant is important for the final shape and contour of the breast.
As you look at the pictures in the PHOTO GALLERY, you will see that a great deal of the person’s final shape depends on the initial appearance of their breasts. That is why Dr. Kulick will show you other examples of patients that had a breast augmentation with a similar shape as yours.
After the Breast Augmentation Surgery
Generally during the first week you will wear a specially designed bra fitted to you. You may be up and around within two or three days but you will be tender across your chest. Post-operatively, your designated Patient Care Coordinator will call you regularly to check on your progress, answer your immediate questions and schedule your post-operative appointment with Dr. Kulick. You will notice a definite, immediate difference in your breast size and over time, the swelling will subside and your final shape will become evident. Light activities can be resumed within 2-3 weeks. Most patients wait about 1-2 weeks before returning to work. Dr. Kulick will discuss this topic during your consultation and a joint decision will be made that is best for you. The results of breast augmentation can accentuate feminine beauty, give you confidence and provide you a fuller bust line.
