Q: I’m 42 years old and I have two kids. I’m considering having something done for me and my post-baby body. In terms of getting a “mommy makeover,” or tummy tuck and breast lift, is SOONER BETTER THAN LATER? Do I need to hurry?
A: Trend or not, we’ve actually been seeing more women in their 60’s for breast implants/breast lifts. (Sixty is the new forty as they say!) They all have their own reasons, and they are uniformly happy with their decision after the surgery.
“Tummy tuck”, or abdominoplasty is a more involved procedure with risks related to the tightening of the abdominal muscles and general extensiveness of the procedure. This means that you need to be in good health and it may take longer to get back to normal activities after surgery. If you meet these criteria, there is no age restriction, and you don’t have to “hurry”. You do need a good evaluation by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon who can access your health and your abdomen.
“Mommy makeovers,” as they are called, are the same as most other cosmetic procedures; it is health, not chronological age that is the key. At 42, you should still have good skin elasticity and heal fairly quickly, with minimal scarring post-surgery. There’s no need to rush, but why put off your happiness?
