There comes a time, when you realize you deserve to be happy, to feel absolutely beautiful when you wakeup and look in the mirror and 100% confident when you step out your door. Many find their way to a surgeon’s office, wanting a slightly more seductive top lip, a “less stressed and wrinkled” forehead, or higher cheekbones – changes don’t need to be drastic!
But what are the secrets to finding the best plastic surgeon for your needs? Legally, any Medical Doctor can perform cosmetic surgery, but only a board-certified plastic surgeon has the education and training to ensure both patient safety and satisfaction. How can you be absolutely sure you (and your face and your body) are in the right hands?
- Find a board-certified plastic surgeon! Board-certified plastic surgeons undergo years of extensive and superb training, adhere to a strict code of ethics, proven protocol when performing surgical procedures and continuing medical education standards. The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS) site provides a free search: http://www.surgery.org/consumers/find-a-plastic-surgeon
- Your procedure will be performed in an accredited facility: Your plastic surgeon should operate in an accredited, state-licensed or Medicare-certified surgical facility only. An accredited facility must meet strict national standards for equipment, operating room safety, personnel and surgeon credentials. This dramatically reduces the risk of serious complications.
- Your plastic surgeon is your partner. You can trust them: You should feel that your plastic surgeon is someone you trust and feel comfortable with. If you undergo a procedure that requires anesthesia, recovery-time and follow-up visits, you may be spending a lot of time together. Your surgeon should treat you like their own family.
- Plastic surgery is their calling, not just a profession. This can be shown by whether they have a history of giving back, such as through public outreach and charitable programs.
Are they on a faculty to help train plastic surgeons in residency? Do they perform reconstructive plastic surgery? Have they published their work and/or participated in clinical research trials to better the field?
